40 years
posted by TheDon
So Sgt Peppers is 40 years old. Is that finally old enough that we can stop over-praising it? How many weak songs does an album have to have before you can drop it from your all-time lists? At least half the songs on this one are weak or unlistenable by any reasonable standards. If I had $1000 to spend at Amazon (since it's not in iStore), I still wouldn't spend the $10 it would take to pick it up.

  1. I guess my standards are unreasonable, then.

Now, if we're talking about the White Album...or Magical Mystery Tour...or Abbey Road...I'd agree with you.

  2. in no particular order:

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
    The Velvet Underground and Nico
    The Doors
    The Who Sell Out
Bob Dylan - John Wesley Harding
The Byrds - Younger than Yesterday
    Are You Experienced?
    Disraeli Gears
    Aretha - I never loved a man
Buddy Guy - Left my blues in San Fran

I could go on. It's just too easy to pick albums from 1967 which are better (in some cases WAY better) than Sgt Pepper.
